LONG ISLAND IMPROVED BRUSSEL SPROUT (Brassica oleracea) was introduced in the 1890s and was the primary brussel sprout grown until development of more uniform hybrids. ABOUT BRUSSEL SPROUTS: Brussel Sprouts are hardy, slow-growing, long-season members of the cabbage family. In fact, the little sprouts that we love look like miniature cabbages and the taste is very similar, but home-grown sprouts are truly a delicacy, with a fresh nutty flavor that has no relationship to the dull stinky things you buy in the grocery store. This is primarily because they suffer under more than a few days refrigeration. Because of the long growing season, please check your gardening calendar. Many varieites will over-winter successfully in milder climates. Others will need to be given a substantial start indoors before hardening off and transplanting into the early spring garden because you want the plants and sprouts to mature in cool weather.
GROWING TIPS: The sprouts develop from the lowest to the highest. So once the nibs of the sprouts are visible, remove the lowermost 6-8 leaves to allow them to develop and continue up the plant each week or two, leaving only the uppermost leaves intact to continue feeding the plant. About 3 weeks before harvest, remove the top of the plant to speed completion of sprout development along the stem area. When the sprouts have reach a fullness (1"-2") harvest by cutting or snapping off the stem. Do not allow them to become "overblown" as you they can lose flavor and texture.
