NARCISSUS AND DAFFODILS are permanent perenniels that will rapidly naturalize AND are deer and rodent proof! With histories that date back millenia, the heirloom varieties were fairly limited and stable in numbers until British hybridizers crowded them out of catalogues by the 20th Century. Only a few of the original heirloom species survived.
GROWING TIPS — Narcissus and Daffodils like well-drained soil and full sun, but adapt to light shade. In the South they welcome afternoon shade and dry soil in summer. Bulb size varies widely, and heirloom bulbs may appear smaller than the hybrids you see in Walmart. Plant in mid-fall when soil cools; earlier is better than later. If necessary, store till then in open bags in a cool, dry spot. Always plant narcissus and daffodils in round groupings. They look better and will naturalize with greater effect. Dig three times the height of the bulbs in cylindral holes, spacing your group of bulbs 4-8" (depending on size of bulb) apart planting narrow ends up, 4-6" apart. Cover with soil a little bulb fertilizer is always recommended. Water in and be sure they don't lack for water if your fall/winter/spring is particularly dry. Re-fertilize lightly every spring and fall. When blooming is done, remove any spent blossoms but NOT the greens. I like to fold them over and use one leaf to wrap around and tie them until they have completely turned brown. These helps them gather food, but also makes for a neat appearance in the garden.
