WHITE WILD INDIGO (Baptisia leucantha) is an American prairie heirloom that looks spectacular in the decorative border. The 1' to 2' long velvety green branches filled with creamy fat pea-like flowers (it is a legume) that are hermaphroditic and bloom from May to June and then transform into large charcoal seed pods useful for flower arrangements. Like all legumes, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, and also benefits in germination when inoculated with rhizobium before planting. Another very nice aspect of this plant is that because of its long taproot it can withstand dry conditions, including the droughts so often visited upon us here in North Carolina. Please note that some states consider this a threatened or endangered species, but the seeds offered here are cultivated, not gathered. Hardy perennial. 10 seeds. Please note this plant is toxic if ingested.

GROWING TIPS: Direct seed in fall or early winter for spring germination. If seeding out in spring, scarify the seed by nicking with a file or immersing in hot water before planting. Prefers light, sandy to medium loamy soils. Does require well-drained soil. Do not plant this one in the shade. It will succeed in a hot, dry location.

SHIPPING: I endeavor to ship my seeds as quickly as possible - usually within 24 - 48 hours. During peak seed season (January - June) this timeframe can stretch to a week or more because of heavy volume of sales. I do the best I can and fulfill orders in the order received. If a variety is on back order with a supplier and not likely to available for a week or longer, you will be advised and given the opportunity to substitute or cancel with refund. I package my seeds for shipping in a manner appropriate to the amount and type of seed - larger orders and larger seeds require more packaging. Whether you choose first class mail or priority shipping, your seeds will ship using a delivery confirmation number which will be supplied to you. Our checkout system is keyed to the US Postal System. For small seed orders, I recommend choosing FIRST CLASS mail at checkout. Larger orders (over 13 ounces) can ship either parcel post, though you may find PRIORITY MAIL actually to be less expensive. (I gave up trying to figure out the US Postal System rates a long time ago).
