ANISE (Pimpinella anisum) is an ancient spice grown by many cultures. The decorative umbelliferous white flower and feathery foliage make it a natural for your decorative border as well as your herb bed. Once so valued it was used to pay taxes! (Oh if only that worked today!) Added to breads and sausages, as well as cakes and liqueurs, for the fabulous licorice flavor. The ground seeds are great in sachets and potpourri as well. MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Anise has wonderful medicinal properties as well. It reduces flatulence and bloating and also is a wonderful expectorant. Crush the seeds to brew an anise tea. The seeds pressed into oil are antiseptic and are often employed in dentifrice. It is said to attract mice if smeared on a trap.
GROWING TIPS: Direct seed in the fall or winter, providing plenty of water for germination and growth. Will produce seed in mid-late summer. Harvest seeds when dry.
