LICORICE (Glycyrrhiza glabra), is the ancient, naturally sweet root that we are all so familiar with as gummy black or red ropes of candy. It contains glychrrhizin, a substance 50 times sweeter than sucrose. In many parts of the world, licorice root is chewed on "au naturale" both for its pleasant sweet flavor and also as a tooth cleaner. It is a powerful medicinal herb. Makes a wonderful tea. Bunnies love it, so plant as a catch crop to keep them away from your lettuces! Perennial zones 6-10. 10 Seeds.

MEDICINAL: One of the most commonly used herbs in western herbal medicine. But, there is always some concern with licorice if you overdo it. Over consumption can be toxic - that is true of it in any form, even candy. A powerful anti-inflammatory, it has been shown to defeat the bacteria that causes peptic ulcers. Also used as a diuretic, antispasmodic, emollient, expectorant, laxative and tonic. The list of conditions it can be helpful for is long but includes Addison's disease, asthma, bronchitis, coughs, arthritis, allergies and mouth ulcers. Externally, the root can treat eczema, shingles and herpes. That barely scratches the surface its medicinal use, and I haven't even mentioned the many other uses this wonderful plant is put to commercially.

GROWING TIPS: Soak seeds for 24 hours or scratch lightly with sandpaper or a nail file and plant 1/4" deep in good seed starting medium in pots in spring. Germination in ideal circumstances is 7-10 days, but can be slow and erratic, so be patient! Once established, pot up successively and then harden off before transplanting into sunny position. Prefers a sandy soil with abundant moisture, slightly alkaline. Does not thrive in clay soils, unless they are preconditioned. Slow to get going, and you won't see much growth the first two years. It is also susceptible to aphids in the early stages so provide some protection like a copper wire encircling at ground level. It fixes nitrogen in the soil (it is a legume) so it makes a good companion plant for high nitrogen feeders like spinach. The root is harvested after 4 years and dried.

Another important reason to grow a large variety of plants is that one of the chief culprits in honey bee colony collapse disorder seems to be that their immune systems are weakened by the prevalence of commercial mono-cropping. In other words, bees pollinating only one variety crop have a diet equivalent to eating only bread. First, seeds from that produce will not grow true to the parent -- you have to keep buying the hybrid seed (get the picture?). Second, most hybrids are developed for market – not home -- growers with an emphasis on extended shelf life, storage and shipping qualities -- NOT flavor, texture, fragrance and all those other elements that home growers seek.

I also add/subtract varieties all season long as inventory fluctuates, so check back often. In off-season, seeds ship very quickly - usually the next business day. But as the prime season comes on, shipping can slow. Please consult this shipping banner before you purchase, so there will be no disappointments! We fulfill orders in the order received. Choosing priority or express shipping does not influence the speed with which your order is processed, only the speed with which it moves through the postal system. I package my seeds for shipping in a manner appropriate to the amount and type of seed - larger orders and larger seeds require more packaging. Whether you choose first class mail or priority shipping, your seeds will ship using a delivery confirmation number which will be supplied to you. This is NOT a tracking number, usually. The new postal protocols are such that your package is not scanned on my end (usually) and will not appear in usps tracking until it gets to your end. Our checkout system is keyed to the US Postal System. For small seed orders, I recommend choosing FIRST CLASS mail at checkout. Larger orders (over 13 ounces) can ship either parcel post, or you may find PRIORITY MAIL to be less expensive, depending on your zipcode. (I gave up trying to figure out the US Postal System rates a long time ago).
