BROWN MUSTARD (Brassica juncea) is an annual herb that originated in Poland and Asia. Of the three types of mustard (black which is too large and difficult to grow, and white which is very very mild, being the other two), brown is the most commonly used for culinary and medicinal purposes, mainly because of its manageable 4' growth, pungent good flavor and wide growing range. All parts of the plant are edible and different cultures utilize in different ways. The greens can be eaten raw or cooked and are very high in Vitamins A and K. Interestingly, it has a high absorption rate of heavy metals, so is also used in phytoremediation. So for that reason, I do not recommend consuming mustard that is grown near highways or in areas with any sort of toxicity (pesticides, etc.) So if you have an organic garden with clean soil and water, growing your own mustard may be the only way you can be assured of safely consuming this healthy and delicious crop. GROWING TIPS: Mustard is a cool season crop, direct sown in early spring in a moist and sunny location. You can succession sow to have a constant supply of the young shoots and leaves. Not drought tolerant. Matures late summer/early autumn. CULINARY: A mortar and pestle come in handy because you will want to grind the seed to some degree (depending on its use) before mixing with cool unchlorinated water to release the pungent oils. Don't mix with hot water as it will make it bitter. You can make your own mustard sauce, or use the ground mustard as a rub for roasts and other meats, mixed with water in all manner of other dishes. Mustard has a special affinity for eggs and pork. It is the white form that is used in pickling, as the brown is too pungent for that use.
MEDICINAL: The seed is a warming agent with antibiotic properties. In developing nations with mosquito problems (which I think is most), consuming mustard is said to make one less desirable to the little beasts. Mixed with hot water, mustard forms a great soak for feet; a poultice for chest colds; or a relaxing and reviving bath soak.
SEED SAVING: Harvest the seed pods before they are dry and allow the seeds to ripen in the pods in a dry location. Another important reason to grow a large variety of plants is that one of the chief culprits in honey bee colony collapse disorder seems to be that their immune systems are weakened by the prevalence of commercial mono-cropping. In other words, bees pollinating only one variety crop have a diet equivalent to eating only bread. Growing an abundant variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers will help sustain our precious honeybees!

All CherryGal Heirloom Seeds are OPEN-POLLINATED. This means saved seed will be true to the parent. Don't be dazzled by the never-ending array of hybrid seeds promoted by gardening suppliers. First, seeds from that produce will not grow true to the parent -- you have to keep buying the hybrid seed (get the picture?). Second, most hybrids are developed for market – not home -- growers with an emphasis on extended shelf life, storage and shipping qualities -- NOT flavor, texture, fragrance and all those other elements that home growers seek.

I also add/subtract varieties all season long as inventory fluctuates, so check back often. In off-season seeds ship very quickly - usually the next business day. But as the prime season comes on, shipping can slow. Please consult this shipping banner before you purchase, so there will be no disappointments! We fulfill orders in the order received. Choosing priority or express shipping does not influence the speed with which your order is processed, only the speed with which it moves through the postal system. I package my seeds for shipping in a manner appropriate to the amount and type of seed - larger orders and larger seeds require more packaging. Whether you choose first class mail or priority shipping, your seeds will ship using a delivery confirmation number which will be supplied to you. This is NOT a tracking number, usually. The new postal protocols are such that your package is not scanned on my end (usually) and will not appear in usps tracking until it gets to your end. Our checkout system is keyed to the US Postal System. For small seed orders, I recommend choosing FIRST CLASS mail at checkout. Larger orders (over 13 ounces) can ship either parcel post, though you may find PRIORITY MAIL actually to be less expensive. (I gave up trying to figure out the US Postal System rates a long time ago). I appreciate all my CherryGal.com customers, but have a special affinity for my seed customers.
