About Motawi Tileworks . . .The beautiful American art tiles produced by Matawi Tileworks are the creation of the sibling team of Karim and Nawal Motawi, backed by a staff of talented artisans. Nawal studied sculpture and ceramics at the University of Michigan and apprenticed at the Pewabic Pottery. Karim, also a U of M grad, is the business manager. The Matawi Tileworks is located in Ann Arbor and uses locally produced clay and glazes. The ingenious and evocative designs are influenced by the aesthetic movements and artists such as Mary Chase Stratton, Adelaide Robineau, Lous Suollivan, C.F. Voysey, William DeMorgan and Dard Hunter. With humble beginnings in 1992, marketing primarily at farmers' markets, today Motawi Tiles can be found in homes nationwide, including large custom installations.
