Prairie Fire (Carex testacea Prairie Fire), also known as Orange Sedge, is a gorgeous specimen plant with attractive olive green, fine-leaved foliage that bursts into orange tones in the fall. In late summer, rose colored flower panicles appear just above the foliage. The nicely mounded plants grow 18" h x 14" w and are good container or border plants with disease and pest resistance and very low-maintenance. Perennial. Zones 6-9. 10 Seeds.
GROWING TIPS. Use small pots filled with seed starting mix. Place the Carex seeds onto the soil and cover thinly with sand or soil. To help keep the ornamental grass seed moist until germination occurs, cover the pots with clear plastic wrap. Move the seedlings to direct sunlight once they have sprouted, either in a south facing window or greenhouse and remove the plastic wrap. Pot up as they grow. A mature plant can be transplanted outdoors into its permanent place usually within one full growing season.
