EDELWEISS (Leontopodium alpinum), is an European heirloom most of us associate with the Swiss Alps and indeed prefers altitudes between 2000-3000 ft. It enjoys protected status in many countries, but can be grown in your garden from seed. Edelweiss also has important medicinal and cosmetic properties. Perennial. Hardy zones 4-7. 25 seeds. MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Edelweiss is grown commercially for medicinal and soon cosmetic purposes. It is used as a tea to treat diarrhea and dysentery, as well as respiratory problems -- including tuberculosis. With a high bioflavonoid content, edelweiss can strengthen capillaries and veins so may be useful in treating varicose veins, hemorrhoids and other vascular aging conditions. Its ability to neutralize free radicals and prevent formation of superoxides may earn it a key role in the prevention/treatment of wrinkles.

GROWING TIPS: Can be started anytime from late winter to late summer in pots or flats filled with lightweight sterilized soil mix. Keep evenly moist but not soggy. Once germination occurs, gradually expose to light. When true leaves appear, prick out to pots. When mature enough, harden off before transplanting to the garden after danger of frost in a sunny position. Particularly suited to a limey soil in a rock garden.

First, seeds from that produce will not grow true to the parent -- you have to keep buying the hybrid seed (get the picture?). Second, most hybrids are developed for market – not home -- growers with an emphasis on extended shelf life, storage and shipping qualities -- NOT flavor, texture and all those other elements that home growers seek.

SHIPPING: I endeavor to ship my seeds as quickly as possible - usually within 24 - 48 hours. During peak seed season (January - June) this timeframe can stretch to a week or more because of heavy volume of sales. I do the best I can and fulfill orders in the order received. If a variety is on back order with a supplier and not likely to available for a week or longer, you will be advised and given the opportunity to substitute or cancel with refund. I package my seeds for shipping in a manner appropriate to the amount and type of seed - larger orders and larger seeds require more packaging. Whether you choose first class mail or priority shipping, your seeds will ship using a delivery confirmation number which will be supplied to you. Our checkout system is keyed to the US Postal System. For small seed orders, I recommend choosing FIRST CLASS mail at checkout. Larger orders (over 13 ounces) can ship either parcel post, though you may find PRIORITY MAIL actually to be less expensive. (I gave up trying to figure out the US Postal System rates a long time ago).
