BUFFALO BERRY (Shepherdia argentea), also known as Serviceberry, is a 3' native American shrub that grows from Canada to New Mexico. Soft green paddle-shaped leaves and bright red glossy berries make this a fine selection for hedge growing. Attracts all kinds of birds and is an important food for ground birds such as grouse. The berries are edible, though tart. Perennial. Hardy to zones 2-7. 10 Seeds.

MEDICINAL: The berries contain low concentrations of saponins which break down in cooking. Can be used safely in jellies/preserves, pies. Some dry and eat like raisins, but I would caution against ingestion without cooking. The berries are traditionally used in treatment of all manner of stomach ailments, constipation and fevers.

GROWING TIPS: One of the joys of the plant is that, like many legumes, it fixes nitrogen in the soil so it can grow almost anywhere, including maritime settings. But it prefers well-drained soils. Sow in fall or cold stratify 60 days and sow in spring. Prefers well-drained soil amended with rich compost but tolerates poor soils and even slightly alkaline soils. Very tough little beauty, tolerating drought, floods, extreme cold and transplanting. For seed saving purposes, this plant is dioecious, meaning you must grow male and female plants (i.e., multiples) to produce seed.
