Aloe vera is an ancient plant, a short stemmed evergreen succulent that has been in use in a variety of medical, culinary and just plain decorative use for thousands of years. Many consider it essential to have aloe vera in their kitchens, for quick application in case of a burn. It is easy to grow as long as you remember that it must never be over-watered. It can tolerate low light. The wonderful thing about aloe is that it reproduces with ease and in time any well-cared for aloe will give birth to "pups" -- small off shoots which can be removed to make new plants. You will get one of these "pups" in a 4" pot of good, nutritious, proper soil for succulents. Keep in the pot until it cries to be "potted up." Then transfer to a slightly larger, and this time, terra cotta clay pot, putting a few pebbles in the bottom for drainage. Aloe grows best, and reproduces best, when it is slightly pot bound. Your pup will be ready to ship by early May.
