Description

DI CICCIO BROCCOLI (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) originated in the Mediterranean area around 600BCE, but was introduced to American gardeners in 1890. Compact 2-3' plant produces 4" central head. After the central head is cut, many side shoots follow. Very early, produces over a long period and great for freezing and a fine candidate for fall/winter gardens. 48-85 days from transplant. 100 Seeds.

NUTRITION: Broccoli is one of the healtiest vegetables you can eat. A powerhouse of Vitamins and phytonutrients, broccoli lowers cholesterol and can also cure ulcers by killing H.pylori bacteria in your stomach, the cause of ulcers.  And a recent study  at the University of East Anglia found that a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane can help prevent and slow cartilage damage and osteoarthritis. These special capabilities of broccoli are even more concentrated when you sprout the seed.

GROWING TIPS: Unless you have an exceptionally long growing season, brassicas must be started indoors, with warmth and light. To give them a proper start requires special equipment - windowsills aren't adequate, though you will get seedlings that way, they will be spindly and not mature properly. Invest in a small seed starter kit with sterlized soil & containers, bottom heat and overhead grow light. You will not regret it! Be sure to "harden off" all seedlings before final planting. This involves giving them short exposures outdoors when planting season approaches, lengthening the time each day from a few hours to the full day and then overnight before planting. In this way, your baby plants will strengthen and really produce for you!

Now Shipping ...

Items listed as "Ships Now" ship within 1-2 business days (non-holiday Monday-Friday). We reserve the option to hold small seed orders when a variety (as noted on the listing as "coming") is not yet in until the order can be filled completely. For larger orders, we ship what is available and back-order the remainder. Live plants ship when weather and your zone permit. By the way, once your order leaves our hands it will be in the hands of the shipping carrier, usually USPS, which is experiencing delays due to high volume. If you have any questions, please email us using the contact link on the website. Thank you!

Why not visit our smaller collection on Etsy? You will get free shipping with your order of $35 or more!
