LUFFA GOURD (Luffa aegyptiaca), aka as Dishrag Gourd is actually an edible when harvested very young and prepared in the same way as okra. The seeds are notoriously difficult to get started and you simply must wait until the soil (not the air) is at least 68-75F. Or, you can start indoors on a heat mat after soaking 24 hours and transfer to vey large containers or to the ground. Either way, they will take 2 weeks to germinate, 65 days to edible fruit stage and 110 to 150 days to finish, so please don't attempt growing if your growing season is not long enough. Having said that, they are a fascinating plant to grow, needing support like a trellis or fence for the long, long, long vines and sufficiently off the ground to accommodate the very long and heavy fruit.
