BROADLEAF PLANTAIN (Plantago major), is one of the most abundant and widely distributed medicinal crops in the world. A poultice of the leaves can be applied to wounds, stings, and sores in order to facilitate healing and prevent infection. The active chemical constituents are aucubin (an anti-microbial agent), allantoin (which stimulates cellular growth and tissue regeneration), and mucilage (which reduces pain and discomfort). I make a truly effective balm every year utilizing this plant's wonderful healing properties. Plantain has astringent properties, and a tea made from the leaves can be ingested to treat diarrhea and soothe raw internal membranes. As with many plants which modern science deemed "noxious weeds" more is being discovered all the time about this wonderful herb. In ancient times, the leaf juice was used to cleanse and heal wounds, treat fevers, and clear lung congestion and it is still used today for throat and skin inflammations. Beekeepers grow near their hives as the chewed leaves applied provide instant relief for stings. And whether eaten or steeped in alcohol and sprayed on, many claim it keeps ticks at bay. Plantain is rich in B, A, C and K vitamins and many healthy compounds including iridoids, flavonoids, polysaccharides, plant acids such as fumaric and benzoic acid, fatty acids such as oleic acid, ursolic, phosphoric and chlorogenic acids. It also contains the trace minerals zinc, iron and calcium. It can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as a pot herb. The only safe way to use this crop is to grow your own to be sure no pesticides, animal waste, etc have been applied. One of my customers was prescribed broadleaf plantain tea for her chronic gastroenteritis. These plants have been grown organically and sequestered to prevent animal and human contact (except for harvest which is done with gloved hands). Easy to grow and proliferates happily! You will get FIVE live plants shipped bareroot in moist medium. Plant immediately in light rich soil. Provide some shade for bigger leaves. Keep moist until established. A very hardy plant that withstands foot traffic and mowing once established. Your five plants may ship in moist medium and may have sprouted seed heads. Will ship Mondays/Tuesdays.
Please note: If for any reason you believe your plant arrives in distressed condition, or damaged, please take a picture and send to me immediately. I will either send you another plant or refund, but I can do nothing if you do not notify me of the plant's condition with photo on arrival.
