CUTTING CELERY (Apium graveolens), also known as Celery Leaf or Seasoning Celery, probably dates to before the days of Homer, where it is referred to as "selinan" and was probably more like this leaf or cutting version than the thick stalks we are used to buying at the grocery store. A hard-to-find biennial self-seeding heirloom seasoning celery that is easy to grow and provides aromatic seasoning for your soups and stew. Like all celery, there is some sodium content, so you can use as a substitute for salt in your cooking. And you can dry, as with any other potherb, for use all winter long! 80-85 days. 100 seeds.
HEALTH BENEFITS: I was researching foods to help my aging knees and celery came out on top! It reduces inflammation, so if you are suffering from joint pains (and also lung infections, asthma, or acne), eating more celery will bring much-needed relief. Because of its high mineral content - especially magnesium - celery is great for stress relief. It aids digestion, especially reducing acidity. Low in calories (only 10 per stalk) and the salt content is healthy, not like table salt.
GROWING TIPS: Light-dependent germinator, so sow very shallowly but mist to keep moist until germination. Soak seeds prior to planting. It is recommended sowing directly, 30 seeds per foot. If starting indoors in starter pots, sow 6-8 weeks before transplanting outside in spring. Germination should take 8-12 days. Be sure to harden off and plant in sunny position in your herb or kitchen garden or keep in containers and bring in in the fall to use for your savory stews and soups all winter long!
