Description

CHIA (Salvia hispanica) is an annual herb, a bushy Mexican native that produces seed which has been made into an energizing drink since the time of the Aztecs. The name is derived from the Aztec "chian" meaning oily. Chia was so valuable to the Aztecs that it was used as tribute and to pay taxes. It was considered one of the three most valuable food -- the other two being corn and beans. The Spaniards banished it for religious/cultural domination agendas, but today Chia is grown commercially for its seed (see below). Grows 1-3 feet high with pretty salvia flowers in blue/purple tones. Loves hot weather. Grow in your edible/ornamental border. Annual. 5 grams.

MEDICINAL/CULINARY PROPERTIES: Chia seeds are a mix of black, brown and white, oval, and about 1mm in diameter. They contain 20% protein, 34% oil, 25% dietary fiber (mostly soluble with high molecular weight) and significant levels of antioxidants (chlorogenic and caffeic acids, myricentic, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols). Chia seeds also provide calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc. The oil in chia is 65% omega-3 fatty acid -- and if fed to your cattle, chickens (mine love it), goats, etc., it transfers to their meat and eggs making for a more nutritious product! The seeds contain no gluten and only trace amounts of sodium. They do not go rancid like flax seed can. There are no known toxic components. The US FDA regards Chia as a safe food. The seed has a nutty flavor and may be eaten raw as a supplement (sprinkle daily on your cereal); ground into a meal called "pinole" which can be made into porridge or cakes or in smoothies; as a beverage called "chia fresca" made by soaking the seeds in water or fruit juices. This is the traditional drink of the Tarahumara who consume it for stamina before running. (It is said just one tablespoon will sustain you for 24 hours.) The Aztecs also used chia medicinally to stimulate saliva flow and to relieve joint pain and sore skin. The seeds can also be eaten as sprouts -- we have all seen the little clay figures sold as "Chia Pets." Didn't know they were such a healthy edible, did you?

Now Shipping ...

Items listed as "Ships Now" ship within 1-2 business days (non-holiday Monday-Friday). We reserve the option to hold small seed orders when a variety (as noted on the listing as "coming") is not yet in until the order can be filled completely. For larger orders, we ship what is available and back-order the remainder. Live plants ship when weather and your zone permit. By the way, once your order leaves our hands it will be in the hands of the shipping carrier, usually USPS, which is experiencing delays due to high volume. If you have any questions, please email us using the contact link on the website. Thank you!

Why not visit our smaller collection on Etsy? You will get free shipping with your order of $35 or more!
