SPARKLER RADISH (Raphanus sativus) is an heirloom also known as "White Tip" and "Sparkler White Tip" and is aptly named for its bi-color presentation which virtually sparkles on the plate. A very early French variety grown since the 1880s. Sweet peppery flavor and crisp and few are aware that the leaves are also edible. If you allow it to bolt, the resulting flowers and seed pods are also edible! Good fall-winter-early spring and easily container grown. Did you know that you can slow roast this radish to great effect. And you can make the prettiest salad roses (see below). 25-30 days. 100 seeds.
NUTRITION: Who would think that the radish had anything to offer other than color and snap for your salad? It is, in fact, an excellent source of fiber, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese, Vitamin C, Folate and Potassium. High in plant sugars, though.
GROWING TIP: Soooooooooo easy! And fast! Plant with your carrots to mark the row as these pop up quickly! Plant spring or fall as they like cool weather. Containers work well too for the smaller varieties.
