RED CORN POPPY (Papaver rhoeas) is a beautiful wild poppy associated with agricultural in the Old World since early times. Because these poppies bloomed in such huge numbers on much of the Western Front in World War I, and because its color is symbolic of the blood spilled by soldiers, this poppy has because associated with wartime remembrance. The thin ruffled petals are vivid red in blooms that measure as large as 4" on plants that grow 2-2.5 feet high. Typically blooms in Spring, but can also bloom in autumn if the weather permits.Very easy to grow and self-seeds from the long-lived soil seed bank it creates that can germinate when the soil is disturbed. GROWING TIPS: Direct seeding at the surface is the best since poppies do not like to have their roots disturbed, but I have successfully started these indoors. Sow in the early spring when the soil is still cool and light frost is possible, or sow in the fall just before ground freezes. Germination in 10-30 days. Prefers full sun and will tolerate poor soil. These beauties have seed that will literally burst into your hands. To collect, just cut flowers and hang upside down with bag over the heads to collect the seeds.
